Pre Procedure

Online consultations serve the purpose of extending knowledge and providing help beyond geographical limitations. Patients can book an online consultation with a medical specialist to have their inquiries addressed and discuss their eligibility from the comfort of their own homes. The evaluations rely on pictures taken by the patient.

Click THIS LINK to book your consultation now. You will be asked to provide photos of your head and answer a few quick questions prior to having your consultation. If you’re not ready for your consultation, feel free to request our information package HERE.

Because we evaluate virtually, the pictures must be as authentic and close to reality as possible. Take photos of your scalp from the top, sides, back, and front. Avoid using flash, as it can distort the thickness of hair, donor regions, and balding scalp. Use consistent lighting from any light source that you can refer back to if more pictures are required. Click Here for an example of what photos are required.

To be a suitable candidate, your donor region must be sufficient enough to be transplanted from. This is determined from the photos of your scalp that will be sent prior to your hair consultation. Additionally, certain forms of alopecia may make you an unsuitable candidate for a hair transplant. If you’ve been diagnosed with any form of alopecia it is important to make your Mane Stay representative aware of this early in the process.

To ensure an optimal hair transplant, choose a qualified, experienced surgeon and discuss your goals and expectations. Proper pre-surgery preparation includes a medical evaluation, stopping medications such as blood thinners, and avoiding smoking and alcohol. On surgery day, local anesthesia is used, and hair follicles are harvested from the donor area and transplanted into thinning areas on the scalp. After surgery, follow all post-operative instructions carefully, avoid touching the scalp, and refrain from strenuous activities. Hair often sheds initially, but new growth will begin within a few months, with full results visible in approximately 12 months. Ongoing care, including using finasteride and regular scalp maintenance, will help sustain results.

Procedure

Follicular units are extracted from hair growth areas and transplanted to hair loss areas. Initially, the transplantation process may cause some trauma to the follicular units. Within the first few days, the grafts connect to the blood supply and integrate with the surrounding tissue in the new region. Surgeons will provide aftercare instructions to protect the transplanted follicular units. The follicular units should remain intact, but if there is physical trauma and significant displacement of grafts, do not try to reposition the hair roots and contact your hair care professional..

The success of hair transplants depends on various factors. It is subjective to say if they can fail or not. The underlying cause of hair loss influences the success of hair transplants.

Two conditions must be met for a successful hair transplant: a predictable hair loss pattern and a stability pattern. Conditions such as male androgenic alopecia, traumatic alopecia, and traction alopecia meet these criteria. This allows surgeons to locate anti-hair loss follicular units and transplant them to the treated regions. It is estimated that the graft development and viability success rate in these cases is 96% on average.

On the other hand, conditions like alopecia areata lack stability and predictability. Patients with this condition are unsuitable candidates for surgery.

FUE hair transplants are minimally invasive procedures performed under local anesthesia. Aside from the initial puncture of the injection needle, patients should not feel any significant pain or side effects. There might be discomfort after the surgery, but surgeons will provide painkillers and instructions on managing it.

Hair transplant procedures consist of multiple steps and can last an average of six to eight hours. The duration depends on factors such as the progression of hair loss, the area of the balding scalp, and the technique used. The extraction and incision-making phases are typically the longest, lasting two to three hours. The surgery is not continuous and patients are given resting breaks in between phases. The procedure will be completed in one day, with the following day scheduled for clinical washing, laser therapy and advanced follicular care.

Post Procedure

The visibility of scars depends on the technique used. FUT hair transplants, the oldest and most invasive technique, can leave a noticeable linear scar on the donor region. In contrast, FUE hair transplants leave tiny wounds on donor and recipient sites, which heal and become invisible over time.

FUE hair transplants are inherently successful. Statistics show that 70% of transplanted follicular units survive before grafts connect to the direct blood supply in the new region, providing a relatively dense result. For specific individuals, the remaining 30% is the threshold between optimal success and mediocre results. Treatments such as OxyCure can increase the survival rates of follicular units up to 98%, significantly impacting the results. However, procedures such as PRP therapy and laser hair therapy may not significantly impact the survival rate of follicular units pre-vascularization. Instead, they can affect the survival rate of grafts post-revascularization. These adjunct treatments also impact speeding up recovery, reducing infections, and sustaining growth.

OxyCure is a treatment that delivers a high concentration of oxygen to a patient using a nasal cannula. It’s used to speed up healing, promote hair growth and improve recovery after a hair transplant surgery.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a non-surgical procedure that uses a patient’s own blood to stimulate hair growth and improve the results of a hair transplant. PRP therapy is a popular alternative to a full hair transplant

Laser hair therapy can be an effective part of the aftercare routine after a hair transplant. It can help stimulate hair growth, increase hair density, and improve the overall health of your hair

For our clinic partners standards, the minimum number of follicular units that can be transplanted is 2000 grafts, while the maximum is 7000 grafts. The final number of grafts will depend on the ratio of the balding scalp to donor regions. A patient may need up to 7000 grafts for ultimate density or fewer grafts based on their specific case. The final decision is made by surgeons at the clinic and heavily depends on the characteristics of hair loss and the capacity of the donor regions to sustain the loss.

Since grafts are extracted from the patient’s scalp, the transplanted hair grows to blend in naturally in terms of texture and color with the remaining hair. The design of the hairline also plays a significant role in achieving authentic results. We work with surgeons of a high caliber to ensure a natural-looking hairline. The permanency of the results depends on the condition of hair loss. Surgeons will choose genetically resistant hair roots that are then transplanted to areas of hair loss so they are likely to continue growing.

Patients can resume daily activities right after surgery as long as strenuous activity is avoided and all surgeon’s instructions are followed. However, the recovery period varies from one individual to another. On average, patients need about 7 to 10 days to recover from swelling, irritation, and other symptoms, and it takes around a month for wounds to heal completely.

The results of a hair transplant rely, to a certain extent, on aftercare and recovery. Both smoking and alcohol consumption can impact how wounds heal by restricting blood flow and oxygen supply to the body, which is vital for healing. It is advisable to refrain from smoking and alcohol consumption during the recovery period to optimize the healing process.

Bleeding is a common symptom in the first few days after surgery, but it is typically not severe and appears as spotting. It is not a cause for concern. If you experience bleeding, you can apply light pressure using sterile gauze to alleviate it. Handle the gauze gently and avoid rubbing it to prevent disturbing the grafts.

Swelling is an inevitable symptom after the procedure. Patients are given headbands to compress the area and prevent swelling. Sleeping at inclined angles of 45 degrees and applying ice on the forehead for 15 to 20 minutes can also help reduce swelling. Typically, the swelling alleviates within five days. OxyCure therapy, which is an adjunct treatment to hair transplants, can also be used to eliminate swelling.

Itching is a typical symptom of healing that occurs when wounds are in the initial closing process. Refraining from scratching the scalp is vital as it could damage the grafts. Following aftercare instructions, such as gently washing the recipient and donor regions can help accelerate the scab shedding process. If the itching becomes unbearable, consult your surgeon for numbing ointments, such as Hydrocortisone 1%, and apply the amount recommended by your professional.

We don’t recommend strenuous activity in the first two weeks after surgery. While most patients can resume their daily activities right after surgery, we strongly recommend taking a break of 2 to 3 days. Some patients prefer taking a 7 to 10 days break to ensure that scabs have fallen off. Swimming, jogging, or any activity that requires physical exertion should be completely avoided for 10 to 14 days post-surgery.
